Root Canal Treatment
Root Canal
Root canal treatment (endodontics) is a dental treatment method used when the soft tissues inside the tooth (pulp) become inflamed or infected. Pulp is a living tissue inside the tooth that contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. When the pulp becomes inflamed due to conditions such as tooth decay, broken teeth, or dental trauma, pain, swelling, and other symptoms can occur.
Root canal treatment is a procedure performed to eliminate these symptoms and preserve the tooth. Here is some basic information about root canal treatment:
1. Procedure Stages:
- Anesthesia: Before the treatment, the dentist numbs the tooth to prevent the patient from feeling pain.
- Access: A hole is opened in the upper part of the tooth, through which the pulp tissue is reached.
- Pulp Removal: Inflamed or infected pulp tissue is removed. The inside of the tooth is cleaned and shaped.
- Washing and Disinfecting the Root Canals: The root canals of the tooth are washed and disinfected with special solutions.
- Placing the Filling Material: The cleaned root canals are filled with a special filling material. This step prevents bacteria from entering by filling the inside of the tooth.
- Covering the Tooth: The upper part of the tooth is protected by covering it with filling material.
- Restoration: A tooth that has undergone root canal treatment is usually restored with a prosthesis or crown.
2. Who is it Suitable For:
- When the pulp becomes inflamed as a result of a cavity, broken tooth or dental trauma.
- In cases where the nerve inside the tooth is damaged.
- In cases where it is determined as the cause of a painful tooth.
3. Advantages:
- Protects the tooth and prevents it from being extracted.
- Relieves pain and discomfort symptoms.
- Restores tooth function and aesthetics.
4. Things to Consider:
- After treatment, care should be taken as recommended by the dentist.
- Painkillers and antibiotics may be used during the healing process.
Root canal treatment is an effective method to solve problems inside the tooth and protect the tooth. However, every patient and situation is different, so it is important to have a detailed evaluation and consultation with the dentist before the procedure.
