What is a Dental Filling?
A dental filling is a dental treatment method used to repair cavities, fractures or other damaged areas in a tooth. A dental filling restores the functionality and health of a tooth by filling the lost part of a damaged tooth. In addition, in cases such as cavities, it helps prevent the progression of cavities by cleaning the cavities and filling them with filling material.
When applying a dental filling, the cavities or damaged areas are first cleaned by the dentist. The cleaned area is then filled with filling material. Filling materials can generally be of different types as follows:
1. Amalgam Fillings (Silver Filling): Amalgam fillings, which are usually made up of a mixture of metals such as silver, copper, tin and mercury, are frequently used in the back areas of teeth. It is a traditional filling material and is durable, but may not be preferred aesthetically due to its gray-metallic color.
2. Composite Resin Fillings: These fillings are made from a resin mixture that matches the color of the tooth. They are especially preferred in the front teeth and visible areas because they mimic the natural tooth color. They are hardened with light and provide an aesthetic appearance.
3. Ceramic (Porcelain) Fillings: These fillings, made of porcelain material specially prepared for the tooth, can be in a color that matches the tooth color. They are advantageous in terms of aesthetics, durable and are generally used in the front sections of the teeth.
4. Inlay and Onlay Fillings: These fillings are specially prepared in the laboratory to correct large cavities or tooth irregularities, and are usually made of ceramic or gold material and are specially adapted to the tooth.
Dental fillings are a treatment method applied by dentists and are used to repair cavities, protect tooth structure and improve oral health. Your dentist will evaluate your dental health to choose the most appropriate filling type for you and create a treatment plan according to your needs.
